Player Value

Player Value summarizes the physical and sporting contribution of a player in a single number, combining performance, participation and trend over time.

What is Player Value?

Player Value (PV) is a comprehensive metric that summarizes, in a single score (0–100), the current sporting value of each player by combining their physical performance and actual participation level.
Its goal is to provide an objective and dynamic view of a player’s value within the team — helping coaches, strength and conditioning staff, and performance analysts make more informed decisions about workload, minutes, development, and scouting.

PV is built from two complementary indices:

  • Athletic Index: measures the player’s current physical quality.

  • PlayTime Index: measures effective use — how much the player trains and competes.

It also includes a time trend (4–8 weeks) and a confidence factor (r) to indicate data stability and representativeness.

What data does it use?

Player Value is calculated from information recorded by the coaching and performance staff during matches and training sessions.

The data considered includes:

  • Minutes played and weekly participation.

  • Type and intensity of training sessions.

  • Total accumulated load (volume and intensity).

  • Participation frequency — whether the player is a starter, rotates, or plays partially.

  • Optional complementary data: weight, height, and playing position.

These inputs allow PV to estimate each player’s relative physical performance and real exposure, generating a balanced assessment between physical quality and effective use within their age group or team category.

How it’s calculated

Athletic Index (0–100)

Evaluates the player’s current physical quality through two components:

🔹 Intensity (per minute)

Measured across three main sub-blocks:

  • Locomotor: Distance/min, Sprints/min, HI-Dist/min

  • Metabolic: HMPD/min, % of time in HMP

  • Neuromuscular: Accelerations/Decelerations (count and mean), CODs/Jumps/min, Max Speed (P95)

🔹 Volume (per session)

Totals of minutes, distance, sprints, accelerations, TME, jumps, and CODs.

All metrics are normalized by position and age, producing a standardized 0–100 score compared to a peer cohort.

PlayTime Index (0–100)

Measures how much the player trains and competes compared to teammates and professional standards.

It combines:

  • Minutes in matches

  • Weekly training volume or load

These are weighted by the player’s Selection (S) — how often they start versus rotate:

  • If the player plays less (low S) → training carries more weight

  • If the player is a regular starter (high S) → match minutes carry more weight

Player Value (PV)

The final Player Value is the geometric mean of the Athletic Index and PlayTime Index, penalizing imbalance between physical performance and actual use.

Additionally:

  • It’s adjusted by age and development stage.

  • It’s scaled down if there’s limited data (confidence factor r).

  • It includes a 4–8 week trendline for monitoring consistency over time.

How to use it – PRO teams

Rotation and minutes management

  • 🟢 High Athletic + Low PlayTime → candidate for more minutes or selection

  • 🟠 Low Athletic + High PlayTime → needs recovery or higher-quality training sessions

Load planning

  • If the Metabolic block is low → increase HMP-based drills

  • If the Neuromuscular block is low → prioritize CODs, jumps, and review Max Speed

Tracking

  • Use the PV trend to avoid decisions based on one exceptional match or session.

How to use it – Academies

Talent identification and development

  • PV highlights who stands out for physical quality and who earns their minutes.

Sub-block development

  • Identifies what each player should work on depending on age and position (Locomotor, Metabolic, or Neuromuscular).

Fair playtime assessment

  • The PlayTime Index shows whether exposure aligns with performance.

Other uses – Recruitment and market

Player Value helps compare internal performance vs. professional standards, supporting:

  • Contract renewals

  • Internal promotions

  • Scouting or market objectives

It helps answer:

“Would our top internal players also be competitive at the pro level?”

FAQs

Does Player Value replace the coach’s eye?
No — it complements it with objective, comparable signals to support better decisions.

Can I view the raw metrics?
Yes. Each player profile displays the Top/Bottom 3 metrics and full detail by sub-block.

Best practices

  • Always review PV + trend + confidence (r) together — not the number alone.

  • In PRO teams, use alerts to turn data into action (minutes or training adjustments).

  • In academies, compare by position and age, and check PlayTime to validate competitive fit.
